Concentration Piece

This is my first concentration piece I have created in the AP Art. My idea was the collision of Halloween and Christmas. I tried my best not to make in look relative to The Nightmare Before Christmas. As my two favorite holidays, I enjoyed drawing this peice. The drawing was be interpreted in many different ways. My idea was a black cat symbolizing halloween was being nutured by Christmas (Candy Cane tree branches) The colorful orbs are being fed into the pumpkin. The cat acts as a fetus and the pumpkin as a uterus. Without each holiday, they couldnt survive.

Artistic Statement

Jessica Brandt
"Opposites"Every since I was able to pick up a writing utensil, I made my own artwork. As years progressed, my skill in art increased. My artwork has always been colorful and contrastive. I tend to make my artwork stand out of the others. That's why I decided my artwork should revolve around the idea of "Opposites Attract" In my pieces I portray and environment in which two complete contrasting characters collide and how they react with one another. In everyday life one can see many opposites. Walking into a school, one could see students tall and students short. Outside the season is winter or summer. Alone these subjects have their own spark, but together they combust into a colorful combination of contrasting characteristics. In making them colorful, I use colored pencils. Their smoothness and vast variety of hues make my work bold and proud. I believe the strong sense of contrast and colorful values will attract the human eye. My concentration's purpose is to show the world what happens when various opposites interact.

Art Experiments

I used watercolor to make a self portrait. I wasnt able to finish it. Im not a fan of watercolor and have a hard time controlling it, but I tried. I feel more comfortable with using charcoal and graphite to make a self portrait of me.

This experiment are many poses of Damili. I used markers because I feel like I have more control. I definitely want to finish this piece because it has an interesting composition. Right now the piece looks a little confusing. I found the exercise a little challenging because Damili changed her poses continously. I look forward to finishing this piece. I am thinking of using acrylic paint to finish it.

An experiment indeed. I wasn't expecting this to go far. I used crayons and ink. I knew I didn't want this to be a finished piece, I just wanted to get a practive of observation. I will redeem myself with a finished observational piece.

This is a charcoal and marker drawing of Dena. I felt more confident with this piece because I work better with charcoal. I put a little of my own style in this piece, making it look a little bit cartoony. Unfourtunatley this peice got a little smudged. I like the piece's strong contrast in highlights and shadows.

This is my favorite experiment. I drew myself in numerous angles. Also in there I drew another classmate. I used many different color markers. There is a lot of line movement in this piece. I cant wait to finish this piece, I believe it has a lot of potential.

This was a musical experiment. I drew this bizarre drawing while listening to a song Ms. Kane put on. I found the song upsetting and desert related. The pitch of the song and its mood seemed to go up and downwards. It was an interesting experiment, I would like to do it again but with a more cheery up beat song.

Summer Homework

This piece represents Day and Night as two different people. I've always wanted to draw this piece ever since I heard the song "When The Day Met The Night" by Panic at the Disco. The song had pictured a strong image in my head of day and night portrayed as a women and a man. In this piece Night has just met Day and is asking her to dance. Day is shocked to see Night because she's never seen anything like him before. I chose Night to be on the Day's side and Day to be on the Night's side, because I wanted to show the strong contrast between them. This piece's strength is the color and idea. The Weakness is the man's face profile. If I could change it I would fix Night's face.

My concentration are opposites. During the end of eleventh grade I brain stormed ideas for my summer pieces. Because I love cute creatures, and dragon like animals, I decided to draw two of them together. This piece resembles two contrasting animals, the top one cute and furry, and the second scary and scaley. My strengths were the textures of the creatures, the line movement of my colored pencils made the top creature look soft and furry. Each value on the scales show the rigid coarseness of bottom creature. The weaknesses in this piece are it's center like position and blank background. If I could improve this piece I would put some hint of value in the background.

My third piece is called Zebra's opposite. I wanted to make a that was part black and white and color. Because zebras are black and white animals I decided to make them my main subject. I used the style of a playing card for the placement of my two zebras. My strengths were the values, colors, and composition. My weakness is the background which is pretty plain. If I could improve this peice I would add something to the background to give it more detail.

My last piece represents the opposite of brother and sister or female and male. I used the photo taken of me and my brother. I used graphite pencils and used the graph method. My strengths are the values. My weaknesses are the rigidness of my hair. I want to re work this peice so it looks more realistic.
